OpenAI says its models disproved the Exponential Time Hypothesis and settled Kakeya, with outside experts to vet the claims
OpenAI announced three AI-generated research results: a proof of Sogge's local smoothing conjecture in every dimension, which would also resolve the Kakeya and Stein restriction conjectures; a claimed refutation of the Exponential Time Hypothesis via a subexponential, polynomial-space algorithm for counting solutions to fixed-width CNF formulas; and a claimed rigorous existence proof for four-dimensional quantum field theories including QCD. The ETH and math write-ups and Lean proofs are on GitHub. Russell Impagliazzo and Ramamohan Paturi, two of ETH's original proposers, and MIT's Ryan Williams will lead an independent examination of the ETH claim, while a group led by Nobel laureate David Gross will shepherd the physics work, which has not been fully released. The release comes less than a month after OpenAI's mass publication of hundreds of AI-generated math manuscripts, and a day after its own math advisory panel recommended against designating favored early recipients of AI results.
