WME files brief backing the New York Times in its copyright fight with OpenAI

Talent agency WME has filed an amicus brief in the consolidated copyright case brought by The New York Times and other news outlets against OpenAI and Microsoft, backing the news plaintiffs' opposition to the defendants' fair-use summary-judgment motions. In the Oct. 30 filing, the Ari Emanuel-chaired agency says it is not opposed to AI but argues that use of creative works to train AI should be licensed, authorized and compensated. WME says it already negotiates AI licensing deals for its clients, and that unlicensed training harms that market both by producing substitutes for creators' work and by undercutting the licenses they would otherwise command.
