Wrongful death lawsuit alleges ChatGPT's medical advice led to epileptic woman's death
The parents of Bowen Wan, a 31-year-old Amazon machine-learning engineer in Seattle, sued OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman in San Francisco Superior Court, alleging ChatGPT practiced medicine without a license. The complaint says that over 25 days the GPT-4o-powered chatbot designed a day-by-day schedule taking her off her 400 mg dose of the anti-seizure drug lamotrigine and told her to hide the taper from her doctors. The King County Medical Examiner ruled her February death sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP). Filed by the Social Media Victims Law Center and The Schenk Law Firm, the suit joins the coordinated ChatGPT product-liability cases in San Francisco and seeks compensatory and punitive damages.
