Amazon scraps plan for four data centers on GW's Northern Virginia campus after community backlash
Amazon is withdrawing its plan to build four data center buildings totaling more than 800,000 square feet on George Washington University's former Ashburn campus in Loudoun County, Virginia, which it bought for $427 million. Under a preliminary deal approved by county supervisors, Amazon will donate about 25 acres valued at $65 million for a community arts center and indoor sports facility, give $5 million to the county housing fund, drop any legal fight over data center zoning, and seek to rezone the rest of the 122-acre site for housing and mixed use.
