OpenAI starts calling its data centers 'compute campuses' as local backlash builds
OpenAI has begun using "compute campus" in place of "data center," debuting the term in Monday's Grid Protectors announcement, where it appeared far more often than "data center." Axios first reported the rebrand as part of a post-midterm policy push led by chief global affairs officer Chris Lehane that also includes community compacts, state siting legislation and AI "speed limits." An OpenAI spokesperson told Business Insider the term "better describes the scale and role of the infrastructure we're building." Activist groups told The Verge a new name does nothing to address energy, water and noise concerns.
