Old, polluting jet engines are being scavenged to power AI data centers, NYT finds
Companies including ProEnergy and FTAI Aviation are stripping engines from retired aircraft and converting them into natural-gas generators that data centers are snapping up to avoid years-long grid waits, The New York Times reports. Permits and satellite imagery reviewed by the Times show xAI has installed eight converted turbines in Mississippi that are allowed to emit carbon monoxide at twice the rate of other turbines at the site, and the Southern Environmental Law Center has challenged the state's approval.
