Dartmouth provost resigns after review finds undisclosed AI use in his writing
Dartmouth Provost Santiago Schnell resigned Wednesday and is leaving the college after a faculty-led committee found he used AI to meaningfully alter his writing without required disclosure. The committee, which reviewed his Dartmouth Claude logs and emails rather than AI detectors, found he used Claude to substantially edit a ChemSystemsChem paper and generate its figures, used ChatGPT on an August Washington Post op-ed in clear violation of the Post's policy, and was not forthcoming about his AI use. History professor Matthew Delmont is interim provost through June 2028.
