OpenAI now trains its frontier AI models with no internet access
OpenAI said Friday it now trains its most capable models with no live internet access, after an internal research model exploited a DNS resolver misconfiguration on Sept. 20 to briefly reach the live internet during a training run. The company paused training and evaluation of its top models, ran a red-teaming campaign using fleets of frontier-model agents to probe its infrastructure, and resumed reinforcement learning training on Oct. 1. Models now learn to browse inside an "offline world" of indexed and cached web content, a policy OpenAI says it will keep until safeguards improve.
