Texas AG Ken Paxton sues OpenAI and Sam Altman over ChatGPT safety

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton sued OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman on Friday in Collin County district court, accusing the company of marketing ChatGPT as safe and reliable while failing to protect Texans, including children, from its harms. The 67-page suit brings claims under the state's Deceptive Trade Practices Act and its SCOPE Act for minors, and seeks civil penalties and a broad injunction that would require OpenAI to block minors from the product and get a court-appointed evaluator's approval before releasing new models. Texas joins several other states, including Florida, Arizona, West Virginia and Iowa, that have sued OpenAI over ChatGPT safety. OpenAI did not immediately comment.
