Closing Time: Astra demand closed the top tier

OpenAI temporarily paused new sign-ups and upgrades to its $200 ChatGPT Pro plan after GPT-6 Astra demand put more strain on systems than other tiers, TechCrunch reported.

Google launched a native Gemini app for Windows 10 and 11 with an Alt + Space overlay that pulls the assistant over whatever is on screen, Google said.

Nvidia said it is working with eight Australian partners to stand up as much as 2 GW of AI factory capacity by 2027, more than doubling the country’s ~1.6 GW computing load, Reuters reported.

Google pledged at least €13 billion ($15.1 billion) for Finnish AI infrastructure through 2028 and signed a 22-year Fortum PPA for up to half of Loviisa’s nuclear output, Reuters reported.

Tencent-backed Enflame soared about 206% on its Shanghai debut as investors bet Chinese AI accelerators can displace Nvidia at home, CNBC reported.

Astra demand closed the top tier

TechCrunch reports that OpenAI has temporarily paused new sign-ups and upgrades to its $200-a-month ChatGPT Pro plan, citing infrastructure strain from GPT-6 Astra. Thibault “Tibo” Sottiaux, who leads Codex and ChatGPT products, said on X that Pro puts the most strain on OpenAI’s systems and that freezing that door was the smallest step that still preserves broad access while the company adds capacity.

Existing Pro subscribers keep their accounts and Astra access, and lower tiers plus the API remain open. Sottiaux had warned a day earlier that Astra demand looked unprecedented even against OpenAI’s past growth spikes, and the company has not said when the $200 door will reopen.

That matters because the AGI-era launch narrative just collided with a hard inference constraint. A week after OpenAI sold Astra as a generational leap, the plan built for the heaviest users became a capacity valve rather than a growth lever.

The one move is to watch whether OpenAI meters Astra harder on Plus and API before it reopens Pro, because the scarce asset is no longer the marketing story — it is rack space that can keep answering. Read TechCrunch

Gemini just sat on the Windows desk

Google says the Gemini app is now available as a native Windows 10 and 11 download, with Alt + Space opening the assistant over whatever app is already in focus. The pitch is instant help without hunting a browser tab, plus the familiar Gemini workspace features — Gmail and Drive hooks, image and video tools, and Spark and Omni for paid tiers where they are offered.

Google already had Gemini on Android, iOS, the web, and Mac, and it previously tested a desktop search app. What is new is a dedicated Gemini shell on Microsoft’s home turf, shipping into a world where Copilot is the default keyboard reflex on many PCs.

That matters because the desktop fight is about muscle memory, not model leaderboards. Whoever owns the one-keystroke overlay owns the moment a worker needs a summary, a draft, or a file pull without leaving Excel.

The one move is to try Alt + Space on a real Windows workflow before declaring Copilot the permanent default, because distribution just got a second native contender on the same keyboard. Read Google’s announcement

Australia’s AI factory map hit two gigawatts

Reuters reports that Nvidia plans an Australian data-center buildout with local partners that could reach up to 2 GW of AI-related capacity by 2027. Australia’s current computing capacity sits near 1.6 GW, according to Data Centres Australia citing DC Byte, so the target would more than double the national load if partners deliver.

Nvidia named Firmus, Sharon AI, IREN, Megaport, ResetData, CDC, NEXTDC, and AirTrunk as the ecosystem standing up land, power, and shell for DSX AI factories, with Nvidia supplying the platform stack. No program-wide capital figure or per-site timetable was attached.

That matters because mid-sized economies are now getting named gigawatt programs instead of one-off campus press releases. The constraint shifts from whether Nvidia will brand the build to whether the grid and cooling can arrive on the same calendar.

The one move is to track which of the eight partners actually energizes megawatts in 2027, because a 2 GW headline without generation and interconnection is still a map. Read Reuters
