Lawsuit says AHN and Highmark recorded patients with Abridge AI tool without proper consent
A Pittsburgh-area woman has filed a proposed class action in Allegheny County Common Pleas Court accusing Allegheny Health Network and Highmark of using Abridge's ambient AI recording tool in exam rooms without adequately telling patients. The complaint says the tool records entire patient-clinician conversations and sends them to Abridge's servers, where they can be retained and used to train commercial AI models. The plaintiff says she was told only that an AI tool would be used during a follow-up visit after a hospitalization. The suit brings claims under Pennsylvania's all-party-consent wiretap law, breach of doctor-patient confidentiality, invasion of privacy and negligence, and alleges HIPAA violations. AHN has rolled Abridge out to about 400 providers across more than 40 specialties.
