UN launches its first standing forum on military uses of AI

The UN Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) will launch a multistakeholder forum on AI in peace and security and the military domain on Thursday in New York, the first such body in the UN system, bringing together governments, defense tech companies, developers, investors and experts. It will draft voluntary design-stage guidelines for companies building military AI tools, an AI security lexicon, and measures against misuse of AI by non-state armed groups. UNIDIR director Robin Geiss warned that AI is compressing military decision cycles to machine speed, narrowing room for human judgment, including in the nuclear domain.
