Canada's biggest news publishers sue Anthropic for copyright infringement
Postmedia, Torstar, The Globe and Mail and The Canadian Press have sued Anthropic in Ontario Superior Court, alleging it scraped their journalism without a licence to train and run Claude. The Oct. 6 claim says Anthropic breached the sites' terms of use and circumvented paywalls and other technical protections, and seeks a permanent injunction, damages and statutory damages of up to C$20,000 per infringed work. The same publishers sued OpenAI in 2024. Anthropic has not responded and the allegations are unproven.
