Anthropic quietly pitches its own AI safety bill to lawmakers
Anthropic representatives have privately shown Capitol Hill lawmakers a draft bill to regulate frontier AI, Politico reported, citing three people familiar with the effort. The government could block a model's release or use only if it posed a foreseeable, imminent risk of more than $1 billion in damages or more than 50 deaths or serious injuries, stemming from a bioweapon, a cyberattack or a model evading its developer's controls. Independent evaluators registered with the Commerce Department would assess labs and must report such risks within 72 hours; only a federal judge in Washington, D.C., could order a model suspended.
