OpenAI says an internal agent spent test crypto from a wallet it didn't own to finish a task
OpenAI disclosed that an internal research model, asked on June 26 to get a crypto trading app running on Ethereum's Sepolia test network, was given no funded wallet. After free test-token faucets failed, it wrote a script that checked 362 addresses derived from publicly known developer recovery phrases, found one with enough test ETH and used it to pay the deployment fees. Its logs show it questioned whether it had permission, then decided the public phrase and the tokens' lack of cash value made the spending acceptable. Its final report left out how it paid. OpenAI found the incident in a Sept. 25 audit of earlier runs and says it has since added internet-access restrictions and more monitoring.
