Meta Connect 2026: The AI Assistant Is Moving Out of Your Phone
New Ray-Bans, a pocket companion, lightweight VR glasses, and a more capable Muse reveal Meta’s plan for everyday AI. Here is what was announced, when it arrives, and what deserves a closer look.

Updated September 24, 2026 — morning edition. This guide covers the September 23 keynote and announcements published before the September 24 developer state of the union, scheduled for 10 a.m. Pacific / 1 p.m. Eastern. It is an editorial assessment of the announcements, not a hands-on product review. Prices are starting U.S. prices unless otherwise stated; future dates are announced targets. Conference agenda
Meta’s most revealing announcement at Connect 2026 may be a pair of glasses with no camera.
Ray-Ban Meta Audio offers a relatively straightforward proposition: put calls, music, and access to an AI assistant into eyewear people might already want to wear. Alongside it, Meta introduced a new generation of camera-equipped Ray-Bans and previewed a much more ambitious VR device. Audio glasses Hardware announcements
Taken together, the announcements suggest a company trying to make AI useful in more of the ordinary moments between opening apps. You might ask for help while cooking, compare something you see in a store, or get a task started while walking to a meeting. The interface becomes something you wear, speak to, or keep within reach.
Our reading of Connect: Meta wants to make a personal AI agent a persistent part of daily life, with a choice of devices that make reaching it feel natural. The opportunity is less time spent managing software. The unresolved question is how much access, attention, and trust people will exchange for that convenience.

Muse becomes the connective tissue
Muse launched on September 8. Connect’s contribution is an expansion of where the agent can work and how people interact with it. Muse launch announcement
The confirmed additions span several different stages of availability:
- Mac computer use is available now: with permission, Muse can operate apps on the Mac.
- A richer voice experience was announced: conversation can continue while tasks run, with voices customized through descriptions.
- An email address for the agent is planned: another route for communicating with Muse and letting it handle tasks.
- Glasses integration is coming in the next few months: users will activate the agent by name. Camera-enabled experiences can use what the wearer is looking at.
That last capability changes the interaction. An assistant that sees the object you are asking about removes some of the work of explaining the task. But identifying an item correctly is only the first step. Choosing a suitable replacement, checking compatibility, and getting approval before buying it are separate tests of competence.
The same distinction applies to Mac control. Being able to click through an application is valuable. Being able to complete a task reliably, recognize a mistake, and leave a clear record is what would make it dependable.
Meta also named a wider set of connections:
| Area | Partners and services named at Connect |
|---|---|
| Shopping | Walmart, Best Buy, American Eagle Outfitters, DICK’S Sporting Goods, Fanatics, Gap, Michael Kors, Sephora, Ulta, Wayfair |
| Payments | Shop Pay, PayPal |
| Travel and groceries | Expedia, explicitly coming soon; Instacart |
| Work | Notion, Granola, GitHub, Box |
These join an existing partner network and Shopify catalog access. A named integration should not be read as a promise that every task, account, or region is supported. Connect recap
For businesses, this is a distribution story as much as an AI story. If an agent increasingly assembles the shortlist, retailers need accurate inventory and product information that the agent can use. Readers should also ask how that shortlist is chosen. Is the recommendation based on suitability, price, convenience, or a commercial relationship? Connect’s list of partners does not answer that question.
Muse gets a face, and a pocket device
Meta Superintelligence Labs introduced Muse Realtime Avatar, which generates an animated character synchronized with the agent’s speech. Reference images can become expressive conversational avatars.
Meta reports approximately 870 milliseconds between the end of a user’s turn and the first synchronized audio-and-video response in its measured system. Its research examples are capability demonstrations; Meta explicitly says they do not all represent avatars available in the app. Generated video incorporates its Video Seal watermarking technology. Meta’s research explanation
A more expressive agent could make tutoring, explanation, and conversation feel more accessible. It could also encourage users to assign the software more understanding or authority than its answers deserve. A friendly face is an interface improvement. Whether the underlying advice is reliable requires a different evaluation.
Muse Charm is a pocket device for voice interaction with the agent. Meta promises further details later this year; its recap supplies neither pricing nor a firm shipping date. Connect recap
The commercial test is straightforward: does a separate object make the assistant sufficiently faster or easier to reach? It has to earn a place alongside devices people already charge and carry. Until Meta publishes final specifications, connectivity requirements, and pricing, Charm is best understood as a preview of its direction.
Ray-Ban Meta Audio could be the most approachable new product
The Audio glasses leave out the camera and retain open-ear listening, calls, and Meta AI access. Meta rates them for up to 12 hours per charge. A dedicated action button offers another way to invoke features. Official product page
The frames weigh 43 grams, come in Clubmaster and Burbank styles, and support prescription lenses. Meta says the included case supplies up to 48 additional hours of charging. Hardware announcement
That package could appeal to someone who wants an assistant nearby without wanting to photograph everything they see. Removing the camera also removes one clear source of concern for people around the wearer.
It does not settle every privacy question. Microphones, voice requests, connected accounts, and cloud processing still deserve understandable controls. Nor can this model deliver camera-based visual assistance through hardware it does not have.
There is also an everyday audio tradeoff. Meta acknowledges that sound may be audible to people nearby at higher volumes in quiet spaces. Open-ear listening is useful when awareness matters, but buyers should judge it in the environments where they actually make calls and listen to music. Official product page
For this category, fit may matter more than an impressive demo. A frame that causes discomfort after an hour will limit how useful its assistant can be.
Ray-Ban Meta Gen 3 is a refinement with practical priorities
The third generation combines a slimmer design, up to nine hours of battery life, a 12-megapixel camera, and 3K video. Ray-Ban’s product materials confirm those core specifications. Ray-Ban product listing
Meta adds a customizable action button, a six-microphone array, and Aviator and Zena frames alongside Wayfarer. Gen 3 product details It claims the microphone system removes more than 90% of background noise; that remains a manufacturer performance claim. Hardware announcement
For existing owners, the upgrade decision should turn on comfort, usable battery life, voice pickup, and preferred frame shape. Meta’s own comparison lists both Gen 2 and Gen 3 as supporting 3K video, with battery ratings moving from eight to nine hours. The video-resolution label alone does not establish a compelling upgrade. The Meta AI app and a connected smartphone remain part of the experience. Official comparison and setup information
For new buyers, the more consequential choice is the product category. Audio glasses, camera glasses, glasses with a small display, and immersive VR devices solve different problems. Similar branding can make them look like steps on one simple ladder when they are actually different tools.
More styles, a cheaper entry point, and broader distribution
The additional fashion announcements include Capri and Nova frames, LISA editions, Kylie Jenner’s Starfire in Ivory, limited-edition Fury, and a Mix & Match customization program. Meta also announced expansion involving Singapore, South Korea, Mexico, Brazil, and the UAE. Its posts differ on UAE timing, so local availability needs checking. Hardware announcement Connect recap
The wider range matters because eyewear is unusually personal. Face shape, prescription needs, comfort, and appearance can outweigh small differences in electronics. EssilorLuxottica and Meta say their combined lineup will exceed 100 styles by year-end, across the broader brand portfolio. Partner announcement
Gen 2 Optics also receives seasonal color additions. Connect recap That is a style update, not evidence of another generation of electronics.
The lower-priced Adventurer configuration deserves attention for a different reason: it brings the advertised entry price down. Buyers should compare the complete package, including the case and lens options, before treating the cheapest configuration as equivalent to every other pair.
Display glasses become easier to buy and more useful
Meta Ray-Ban Display is the existing product with an in-lens screen and Neural Band controls. Connect expands access and adds functions; it does not introduce a new Display generation. Current product listing Display announcement
The software changes include cycling and public-transit directions, landmark-based walking guidance, an Explore app for finding glasses experiences, richer calendar actions, mirrored phone notifications, and Threads Community feeds. Cycling and transit directions are scheduled for later in September in the U.S. and Canada. Other functions have separate rollout conditions. Display announcement
The editorial question is whether these additions reduce interruptions. A quick direction or an urgent message could save a phone check. A constant stream of low-value notifications could put the same distraction closer to the eye. The quality of notification controls will matter as much as the display.
“Hologram” calling requires a careful distinction
Display’s forthcoming hologram feature creates a digital face after a short self-capture. Its expressions are inferred from the caller’s voice. It begins as U.S. WhatsApp Early Access later this fall. Display announcement
That is a generated representation of the caller, not a live camera view of the caller’s facial expression. It could make hands-free calls feel more personal, but recipients should understand what they are seeing.
Muse Realtime Avatar is different again: it gives the AI agent a character. One feature represents a human caller; the other gives software an expressive appearance. Neither should be described loosely as ordinary video calling.
Hearing support and other software updates could matter more than new frames
Meta’s planned glasses updates cover capture, accessibility, everyday tasks, and privacy:
| Update | Announced change |
|---|---|
| Hearing enhancement | Meta describes FDA-cleared software for adults 18+ with perceived mild-to-moderate hearing loss; U.S. launch later in 2026 on supported glasses, priced at $149.99 or through an eligible Meta One subscription |
| Audio controls | Left/right balance and mono audio |
| Visual assistance | More detailed responses, developed with feedback from blind and low-vision users |
| Capture | Dolby Atmos spatial audio, dynamic photos with frame selection, and landscape crop options |
| Personal assistance | Guided running/cycling workouts, meal logging, nutrition insights, shopping assistance |
| Controls | Customizable touchpad shortcuts |
| Private Processing | Planned protected processing for glasses AI features |
Sources: Glasses software announcement and Connect recap. Meta has not supplied a single universal rollout date or compatibility list for everything above. The subscription tier required for hearing enhancement should be checked before purchase.
The hearing feature is especially significant because it offers a specific, practical reason to wear the product. Its value will depend on suitability, comfort, and performance in everyday conversations. A broad AI promise is harder for a buyer to evaluate than a well-defined function.
Existing owners have a useful reason to pay attention here. Software may change what their glasses can do without requiring new hardware. But eligibility needs to be confirmed model by model; the announcement’s phrase “supported glasses” does not mean every pair.
Meta VR Glasses put the weight somewhere else
The most substantial hardware preview is Meta VR Glasses. Meta advertises approximately 100-gram eyewear paired with a pocket-sized puck. Prescription inserts will be sold separately. VR product overview
The tethered puck houses computing, storage, and battery. Specifications include a micro-OLED display system marketed as 5K, a Snapdragon Reality Elite processor, eye and hand input, Dolby Vision and Atmos, and up to three hours of high-resolution media playback. VR announcement
The important qualification is physical: 100 grams describes the glasses, not the entire system. Moving components off the face could improve comfort considerably, but the user still carries a second object and manages a cable.
That tradeoff is worth evaluating on its own terms. Comfort on the nose, heat, cable placement, and freedom of movement will tell buyers more than the headline weight alone.
Meta also promises multiple virtual screens, a virtual keyboard and touchpad mapped to a flat surface, and wired or wireless connections to Mac and Windows computers. Hologram calling is planned at launch, with digital representations of callers and support for services including WhatsApp and Zoom. Detailed VR announcement
A portable private workspace is a plausible use case, particularly where a conventional monitor is inconvenient. Sustained work sets a higher bar than reading a few messages: text clarity, input accuracy, window management, and comfort must hold up over an entire session. Surface typing should be tested against the work someone actually does before assuming it replaces a physical keyboard.
Movies and live sports give VR a clearer reason to exist
Meta calls VR Glasses the first IMAX Enhanced-certified VR device. It says Disney+ 3D viewing will begin in November in selected countries, ahead of the new hardware. It also announced a Disney Immersive Cinema by ILM experience, broader 3D movie offerings, and work with James Cameron’s Lightstorm Vision on additional releases in 2027. VR announcement Detailed entertainment plans
Other announced programming includes Draymond Green’s Open Season on September 29, the Billie Eilish concert film Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour in 3D on Quest in November, a 3D version of Stuntnuts next year, and National Geographic: Beyond. Detailed entertainment plans
These announcements mix different formats. A large virtual screen, a stereoscopic movie, and a scene that changes the environment around the viewer are distinct experiences. Subscriptions, territories, and title availability also differ.
The strongest entertainment argument is that a device can provide an experience that is inconvenient or impossible to reproduce in the room a person happens to occupy. Whether people want that experience alone, repeatedly, is the harder question.
Sports could supply the repeat use. Meta announced ESPN immersive coverage with 8K streams and 180-degree views, starting with college football on Quest this year. It targets more than 100 annual immersive live sports events when VR Glasses arrive, with partners including MLB, NBC Sports, TNT Sports, and UFC. VR announcement
That total is a programming commitment, not a complete rights package or a guarantee that a particular team’s games will be available. A fan’s buying decision needs the actual schedule, subscriptions, territorial restrictions, and price.
For sports producers, our view is that camera placement and presentation will be crucial. Viewers need to follow the play, understand context, and choose where to look without losing the action. A spectacular courtside perspective is a start; a consistently watchable broadcast is the product.
Gaming continues, with a stronger push toward hand input
Meta says VR Glasses will support the Quest catalog with Touch Plus controllers. Game compatibility announcement It also promises more than 75 games playable through hand gestures at launch and access to Xbox Cloud Gaming. VR product overview
Beat Saber receives a major update in spring 2027 on Quest and VR Glasses. The new Flux mode uses hand gestures and launches with 35 songs, while retaining controller support. The wider update includes a rebuilt campaign, new progression and cosmetic rewards, a refreshed interface, and hand tracking across the game. Beat Saber announcement
This is a meaningful design test. Removing controllers can reduce setup and make an experience more approachable. It also requires tracking that works when movements are fast, hands overlap, or users act unpredictably.
The other announced games and updates span several genres:
| Game or update | Announced window / detail |
|---|---|
| Dragon Grove | Spring 2027; hand-driven plant puzzles and dragon companions |
| PAYDAY: Aces High | Open playtest October 19; full release later in 2026; PCVR cross-play |
| Hot Dogs, Horseshoes, and Hand Grenades 2 | November 12 on Quest 3/3S |
| Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies VR | 2027; hand input and voice-activated objections |
| Tetris Effect: Mixed Realities | 2027; hand-controlled play integrated with the room |
| Supernatural | Returns to the Horizon Store this fall; planned for VR Glasses at launch |
| Two Point Hospital | Announced; hand-controlled hospital management |
| Dice Throne Digital | Early 2027; free-to-play, with cross-platform play |
| Cardmada | Coming soon; pirate card combat with poker-inspired combinations |
| Story of Seasons: Your Wonderful Life | Coming soon; farming and life simulation |
Official game roundup. Device support and timing vary by title; the announcement should not be read as making all of these immediate releases.
The variety is encouraging because it gives the hardware more than one audience. A comfortable device needs reasons to return to it after its first impressive demonstration.
Privacy is part of the product’s usefulness
An agent that can operate software or shop on someone’s behalf needs more than a reassuring personality.
Meta says Muse uses a dedicated cloud environment, a separate Sentinel system to check actions, permission controls for connected services, and approvals for sensitive actions such as sending messages or buying things. It also says users can review an audit trail, disconnect services, opt out of training on their interactions, and keep Muse conversations and VM data out of its advertising systems. Those are company statements about its design. Muse security commitments
Meta’s stronger Confidential VM protection was announced for later in the year. It should not be described as a capability already available to everyone. The glasses’ planned Private Processing is another specific protection, not proof that every related service or data flow has identical safeguards. Muse launch Glasses software plans
Separate reporting adds a relevant issue. Reuters reported on September 22 that Meta was testing human contractors handling some Muse calls internally. Meta characterized this as testing intended to inform safety and privacy before public release. That report does not establish that ordinary public Muse calls are currently handled by humans. Reuters
The questions for users are concrete: Who receives the information? What action has been authorized? Can permission be limited? Can a mistake be stopped or corrected? Is human assistance clearly disclosed when it occurs?
Bystanders have a different stake. The wearer can accept a policy and change settings; people nearby may have no equivalent control. A camera-free option reduces one concern, while clearer recording signals and understandable data practices remain essential across the range.
Meta One is relevant background, not a new Connect launch
Meta introduced its subscription lineup on September 15. Individual bundles start at $7.99 monthly for Core and $19.99 for Premium. Business and creator bundles begin at $14.99, with higher tiers offering more publishing, management, analytics, and Business Agent capacity. Availability and benefits vary by account, app, and region. Meta One announcement
Connect makes those subscriptions more relevant because hearing enhancement is tied to Meta One as an alternative purchase route. The applicable plan and device eligibility still need checking. Glasses software announcement
Readers should keep three costs separate: the hardware, optional AI or software subscriptions, and paid entertainment or games. An attractive entry price does not describe the whole experience someone may want.
For a business, the worthwhile calculation is similarly practical: time saved, successful tasks completed, and the amount of human review still needed. A subscription becomes valuable when those benefits are visible in normal operations.
The developer story is still unfolding
At this edition’s cutoff, the developer state of the union has not yet taken place. Meta’s published sessions cover Unity and Unreal development, Android apps in VR, Web/WebXR, controller-free interaction, and paths for building across VR and AI glasses. Developer agenda and sessions
Those sessions matter because developers need details that a consumer keynote cannot supply: permissions, supported inputs, performance limits, distribution, compatibility, and access to the relevant tools.
The strongest opportunity suggested by the keynote is software that makes sense in a specific moment: a brief visual instruction, a hands-free interaction, a useful check on an object, or a task with an unmistakable completion state. Simply moving a crowded phone interface into someone’s field of view would waste the format’s advantage.
A final conference-wide developer assessment should incorporate the September 24 documentation and announcements after they are published.
What readers should do with the news
For people curious about Muse, start with one task whose result is easy to verify. Judge the agent by whether it completes the task accurately, asks sensible questions, and shows what it did. Add access when the benefit becomes clear.
For glasses buyers, decide whether the need is listening, visual assistance, quick on-lens information, or immersive viewing. Then evaluate fit, prescriptions, and the functions available at purchase. Those choices matter more than finding the product with the longest feature list.
For current owners, check software eligibility before replacing hardware. For anyone considering VR Glasses, wait for independent testing of full-session comfort, battery behavior, text readability, and input.
For developers and businesses, the useful question is which part of an existing workflow becomes materially easier with an agent or wearable interface. A small improvement repeated every day can justify adoption more convincingly than a dramatic task performed once onstage.
Connect 2026 presents a coherent ambition: make capable assistance easier to reach throughout the day. The products will earn their place if they reduce effort while leaving people able to understand and control what happens on their behalf.
The measure to watch is how much useful work gets done after the novelty fades.
